Manage Children of Divorced Families

Divorce is difficult on the families it affects. But it doesn't have to be hard to manage those records.

Whose Family Does the Child Belong To?

Add the child to the record of the parent/guardian that the child lives with most of the time. (So if Bobby lives with Mom but sees Dad on weekends, he should be listed in Mom's family.) If custody is equally split, then the child can be listed in either family or on both records.

If you decide to add the child to only one parent's record but still want to track that connection, you can add the other parent in the family's Relationship window.

How Do I Split Tuition Payments?

You may need to split tuition or other payments related to the child between parents. You can split them equally for each half of the year or based on a percentage. Follow the steps based on the family's situation.

Before you split payments, make sure the child is listed on the appropriate family record(s):
  • If each parent pays 50% of the total, the child can be listed in either family or on both records.
  • If the parents pay a different percentage, the child must be listed on both family records.

Split Payments Equally

  1. On the Information tab, click Tuition & Fees > Billing Address.
  2. If the child is only on one parent's record:
    1. Locate the family record that the child is listed on.
    2. Enter the other parent's billing information.
    3. Select how to send statements for this parent.
    4. Add the Bill From and Bill To dates for this parent's half of the year. The other parent (the current family record) is billed outside of these dates.
      Note: For example, if you're on Mom's family record, you'd add Dad's billing information.
      • If he pays August through December, you'd enter Bill From 08/01 and Bill To 12/31.
      • Mom would be billed outside of those dates, which would be 01/01 to 07/31.
  3. If the child is listed on both family records:
    1. Locate Mom's family record.
    2. Add the Bill From and Bill To dates for Mom's half of the year.
    3. Locate Dad's family record.
    4. Add the Bill From and Bill To dates for Dad's half of the year.

Split Payments Based on Different Percentages

  1. Figure out the total payment each parent needs to pay based on the percentage.
  2. On the Information tab, click Tuition & Fees > Rates/History/Keywds.
  3. Locate Mom's family record.
  4. Enter the total amount Mom needs to pay.
  5. Locate Dad's family record.
  6. Enter the total amount Dad needs to pay.
