Email Opt-Out Reasons
Each person on the Email Opt-Outs tab has a Reason that explains why they were opted out. The Reason also determines whether you can opt them back in from this page.
How Reasons are Grouped
Reasons fall into two categories:
- Permanent — The address cannot receive email from your site again until the underlying issue is fixed.
- Temporary — The address could not receive a specific email but may be able to receive email again later.
For longer explanations of each Reason and what you can do about it, see Why Emails Aren't Being Delivered.
Self-Service Unsubscribe
-
Unsubscribed — The recipient clicked the unsubscribe link in an email from your site. You can opt them back in from the Email Opt-Outs tab if they ask to start receiving email again.
Permanent Bounces
The address cannot receive email until the underlying issue is fixed.
- Hard Bounce — The recipient's mail server permanently rejected the email.
- Hard Bounce (Unknown) — The recipient's mail server rejected the email but did not specify why.
- Email Address Does Not Exist — There is no mailbox at the address.
- SES Suppression — The address is on the email service's platform-wide suppression list. The email service refuses to send to it because the address has a history of bouncing or being reported as spam across many senders.
- SES Account Suppression List — The address is on ACS Technologies' own suppression list within the email service. It was added automatically after a previous email from ACS Technologies hard-bounced or was reported as spam.
- Recipient Unsubscribed — The recipient's mail provider reported that the recipient wishes to unsubscribe.
Temporary Bounces
The address may receive email again later.
- Soft Bounce — The email could not be delivered, but the problem may not be permanent.
- Mailbox Is Full — The recipient's inbox cannot accept new messages.
- Message Too Large — The message exceeded the recipient's size limit.
- Content Rejected — The recipient's mail server rejected the message based on its content.
- Attachment Rejected — The recipient's mail server rejected an attachment.
Complaints — Permanent
The recipient (or their mail server) flagged the email and will not receive more email from your site.
- Marked As Abusive — The recipient reported the email as spam or unwanted.
- EMail Marked As Fraud — The recipient reported the email as fraud or phishing.
- EMail Marked As Having A Virus — The recipient or their mail server identified the email as containing a virus.
Complaints — Temporary
A complaint was registered, but the issue may resolve on its own.
- General Complaint (No Type Given) — A complaint was registered without specifying a category.
- Mail Server Auth Failure — The recipient's mail server reported an authentication problem with the message.
- General Complaint (Unknown) — A complaint was registered with an unrecognized category.
Which Reasons Allow Opt Back In
The Opt Back In button only appears for Reasons where the opt-out can safely be reversed from this page. Unsubscribed is confirmed to allow Opt Back In. For other Reasons, the underlying problem must be resolved before the person can receive email again — for example, the address may need to be corrected on the person's profile, or you may need to contact ACS Support.
