SSRS Encryption Key

Information on the SSRR encryption key, including how to back up an encryption key.

SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) uses encryption to protect sensitive data with an encryption key. The encryption key SSRS uses is separate from the database, and you must back it up separately. If you move the ReportServer database, you must restore the encryption key before SSRS can work. You only need to back up the encryption key once unless you manually change the encryption key or make major changes to the system.

Back Up an Encryption Key

  1. Launch the Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
  2. Click Encryption Keys.
  3. Click Backup.
  4. Go to the appropriate file location.
Tip: Save a backup of the SSRS encryption key in your Database Backups folder so it backs up to alternate media as part of your scheduled nightly job. You can also save it directly to backup media, such as a CD-R or USB drive, and store it in a safe place.
  5. Give the backup file a meaningful name so you know where to find it.
  6. Enter a password to use to restore the key in the future. Re-enter the password to confirm it.
  7. Click OK.
