Create an Opportunity Scan Based on Predefined Boundaries

When you scan for opportunities in a large geographic area, you can scan based on predefined boundaries such as cities or counties.

This scan is often used to answer a question based on a regional agency boundary.

For example, you can scan within boundaries to find areas with high Hispanic populations and direct Spanish-speaking resources to those congregations. Church planting is also often done at a regional agency level to find higher population and higher growth areas.

  1. In the User Assistant, under What Would You Like to Do?, click Create Opportunity Scan.
  2. Select Predefined Boundaries (e.g. Zip Codes, Cities, Counties, etc).
  3. Select the Agency Boundaries, Standard Layers, and Landmarks you want to scan, then add each one to your scan. Each value displays under Ares To Report On.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select the variables you want to scan for, then click Next. For example, you could select Overview, Racial/Ethnic Trends, and Hispanic or Latino.
  6. In the Scan By drop-down list, select to scan by Census Blockgroups, Census Tracts, Zipcodes, Counties, States, Elementary School SABS, Middle School SABS, or High School SABS.
  7. Select the Year to view.
  8. To change your scan's color palette, click Choose a color palette and select the colors you want.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Under Review and Summary, review your Study and Geography Options. To make changes, click Previous. Otherwise, click Finish.
The map displays your results, and your Opportunity Scan Report displays in a new window. After scanning for opportunities in a large area, you can analyze smaller areas with a neighborhood level scan.
