Manage Children of Divorced Families
Divorce is difficult on the families it affects. But it doesn't have to be hard to manage those records.
Whose Family Does the Child Belong To?
Add the child to the record of the parent/guardian that the child lives with most of the time. (So if Bobby lives with Mom but sees Dad on weekends, he should be listed in Mom's family.) If custody is equally split, then the child can be listed in either family or on both records.
If you decide to add the child to only one parent's record but still want to track that connection, you can add the other parent in the family's Relationship window.
How Do I Split Payments?
You may need to split payments related to the child, such as tuition to an affiliated school, between parents. You can split them equally for each half of the year or based on a percentage. Follow the steps based on the family's situation.
- If each parent pays 50% of the total, the child can be listed in either family or on both records.
- If the parents pay a different percentage, the child must be listed on both family records.
