Invalid US ZipCode Value During Electronic Tax Filing

This troubleshooting guide addresses the issue of an invalid US ZipCode value during electronic tax filing. The error, which affects Payroll products version 11.0 and above, occurs when the ZIP code digits exceed 5. The solution involves verifying the organization's address and all employee ZIP codes are 5-digits and editing the ZIP code field to remove any extra digits and hyphen or dash.

When electronically filing taxes, this error displays:

Element 'USZipCode' has an invalid value for the data type USZipCodeType.

  • Products affected: Payroll

  • Versions affected: 11.0 and above

This error occurs if the ZIP code digits are more than 5-digits (For Example: 29501-1234)o resolve this error, define the W-2 box description or edit Form W-2.

To resolve this, view the Validation Report and verify that the organization's address and all employee ZIP codes are 5-digits.

If you are using 9-digit ZIP codes, the last four digits and hyphen or dash will need to be removed from the ZIP code field.

  1. Under Advanced Tools, click the Admin Utilities tab.
  2. In the drop-down list, select Select Dataset and click Go.
  3. Select the desired dataset and click Edit.
  4. Edit the Zip Code field and remove the 4-digits and dash/hyphen.
